“How do you feel?” people keep asking as my thirtieth birthday approaches. Well, I feel pretty good: I recently got engaged to my drummer boy and planning our dream wedding, I love my job, a booming social life and I am blessed with amazing family and friends.
We’re all too familiar with the thirtieth-birthday cliché: The semi tragic I’m old and everything is going downhill from here.
When looking in the mirror you suddenly see a wrinkle that you did not have a few months ago, you have to spend extra time in gym and watch what you eat just to stay in the shape you are… not even mentioning what you need to do when you actually want to lose some weight. You try every miracle cream and treatment in aid of reversing the ageing signs, your tired and the worst part is the 3-day recovery time needed after a night out. Turning 30 also comes with the dreaded question of when will you be having babies, your biological clock is ticking….
I am filled with mixed emotions about entering this new chapter in my life. At the age of 29, my life has never been more busy, exciting and filled with great opportunities, but stating that my life at the moment is great, still doesn’t make the step to the 30’s any easier.
As a twenty-something you look at your life with hope and anticipation of all to come and let’s face it, being in your 20’s just sounds better than being a 30 year old. It also seems that as a 30 year old, everyone is settled and having babies. I definitely missed the memo on that!
For those of you who don’t know me, I was never the girl that planned to get married and have babies before I turn 30. I always knew that I would be a late-bloomer… in the sense of settling down and I was right. I only recently got engaged and at the moment my life is buzzing with wedding planning, social events, a great career and exciting opportunities.
So for now I will be the 30 year old that is engaged to my drummer boy, spends a few extra hours in the gym every week, still party with Tequila but recovers for 2 days and make use of the products and treatments out there to help fight the signs of aging. Speaking of, here are a few of my MUST HAVE items:
Dermalogica Antioxidant hydramist is a refreshing antioxidant toner that helps firm and hydrate.
Dermalogica Overnight repair serum is a powerful peptide serum with Argan and Rose oils helps stimulate cellular repair overnight and it smells divine.
Africology Slimming detox cream contains a botanical blend of Seaweed, Ivy, Horsetail, Queen-Meadow and biting Clematis , all chosen for their effective slimming and firming action.
So when not looking at the age I am, but rather at the place in life that I am in now, I can truly say that I have never been in a better space. According to me, 30 is the new 20 and I’m looking forward to this new chapter in my life.
As Julie Tilsner says in her book 29 and Counting: “Thirty is nothing to be afraid of. “You’ve got a whole new decade to work with, and this time you’re prepared! You’re educated, you have years in the workplace, you finally know what your hair will and won’t do. You can still dance on tables, but you have some life experience. Turning 30 is actually a really awesome thing.”
