So a few days ago I had a terrible kitchen accident that resulted in a second degree burn on my leg. Needless to say, I rushed to Olivedale clinic who treated the burn right away.

But now, like any deep skin wounds, it’s going to leave a scar, which is definitely something I don’t want! Especially with the holiday season upon us…

When an injury to the skin occurs – whether from a cut, burn or surgical incision – the body acts as fast as possible to repair the affected area, devoting its energy and resources to healing quickly rather than perfectly. As a result, there is an overproduction of collagen at the site of the wound which leads to scarring. Factors like skin colour, the immune system, age, the extent of the damage, exposure to sunlight and family history, all affect how fast or well the area will heal.

Scars usually fade over time, and while there is no product that can make a scar disappear entirely, there are various solutions which offer an opportunity to improve the scar’s appearance. Luckily not so long ago I received a press drop from Bio-Oil and combined with a great Dermalogica SPF, guess what, I have everything I need to best take care of my scar.

1.Bio-Oil

Bio-Oil is effective for use in scar management, working to maximise the elasticity of the skin, and providing relief from itching or other irritations. It restores the skin function and helps to improve the appearance of the scar, so that it is softened, flattened and normalised in its colour and texture.

After two to three weeks, once the wound has healed, massage Bio-Oil into the area in a circular motion, twice daily for at least three months. Younger scars have a greater chance of improvement within a shorter time period.

Only apply Bio-Oil once the wound has healed, and never use on broken skin.

Bio-Oil contains no preservatives, is dermatologically tested, hypo-allergenic, non-acnegenic and suitable for all skin types.

Bio-Oil is available at pharmacies and selected retail outlets nationwide in 60ml (R89.99), 125ml (R129.99) and 200ml (R189.99).

2. Dermalogica protection 50 sport SPF50

During the healing process, it’s important to keep the wound protected from the sun to minimise further scarring. One of my favourite products that’s always in my bag, is the Dermalogica protection 50 sport SPF50. This sheer solar protection treatment defends against prolonged skin damage from UV light and environmental assault. Oleosome microspheres help enhance SPF performance and counteract moisture loss triggered by extended daylight exposure. The lightweight formula also helps neutralise damage and binds moisture to skin without a greasy after-feel.

Important tip: No matter the weather, shield your skin with SPF daily to protect against skin-ageing environmental assault.
