Afternoon TeaWith all the grace and decadence that has characterized the timeless tradition first introduced in the early 19th century by the 7th Duchess of Bedford, Sun International’s Maslow Hotel in Sandton introduced its indulgent Afternoon Tea to a selected few and I was one of the lucky ones to attend.

We were the first to try The Maslow’s superlative Afternoon Tea selection and delectable eats. The Maslow Tea, blended by Nigiro in collaboration with The Maslow’s Food and Beverage Manager, Patrick Fisher, is an extraordinary blend of five flavors; Assam, Lemongrass from Egypt, Bergamot, Pure African Rooibos, and Blue flower resembling the Jacaranda flower.

Nigiro is a Cape Town based company founded in 2007 by Taiwanese ex-pat Mingwei who has a passion for blending tea and creating a culture of tea appreciation in South Africa.

The Maslow Tea is a sophisticated, refreshingly comforting and invigorating tea that echoes the ethos and character of The Maslow Hotel. With its ingredients carefully selected and infused to deliver a distinctly different and addictive flavour, The Maslow Tea selection is an inviting reason to relax and indulge in the timeless tradition of taking afternoon tea, with a distinctly contemporary twist.

Afternoon Tea has been traditionally enjoyed by high society. Dainty, intricate cakes, pretty frosted confectionaries, fine porcelain and discreet, social conversation were the order of the day. High Tea on the other hand was a high-spirited and affair where the family gathered together after the hard-working man of the household came home. A hearty High Tea was served on tables brimming with simple, fresh fare which often took the place of dinner. Heavy brown firestone teapots would fill cups with exceptionally strong tea and tasty offerings would include the likes of a side of smoked ham; an egg-and-bacon pie with tomatoes and watercress; potted shrimps with bread and butter, honey and jam; and heavy cakes often baked from recipes particular to the region.

By contrast, The Maslow Afternoon Tea – designed by Executive Chef Dallas Orr, who hails from The Table Bay which is renowned for its High Tea – will feature a sumptuous selection of gorgeous and perfectly-presented cakes, flavored scones, mouthwatering savories and delicate finger sandwiches.

The selection of teas is dazzling, with a variety of green teas from China and Japan; flavoured green sencha tea; Milky Jin Shuan Oolong tea; a choice of black teas; fruit infusions; herbal infusions, and delicious flavoured rooibos teas.

Afternoon Tea at The Maslow – the most exclusive Proper Tea in Sandton, will be available from October 2014 on Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 14h30 and 17h30.

Guests can languish in The Maslow Lounge where they will be served in style at their tables – no need to get up. There are three Afternoon Tea options; the Fashion Afternoon Tea which includes the chef’s selection of indulgent dainties, a choice of loose leaf teas, and filter coffee; the Champagne Tea which includes all the spoils and a glass of Moët & Chandon Rosé, and the Methodé Cap Classique Tea, which includes a glass of Graham Beck Rosé instead of the Champagne.
